Susan Chen, left, sits with her son Jusuan Lee, of San Diego on popular 'Potato Chip Rock,' high on top of Mt. Woodson. History: Rancher Philip Crosthwaite, believed to have been the first white settler, arrived in 1859, and soon the valley became an agricultural community. The Poway Municipal Water District formed in 1954, and with water came growth. Lake Poway was created in 1971, and the town incorporated in 1980. How it got its name: The name, derived from the Kumeyaay, could mean either 'place where the valley ends' or 'arrowhead.
